When I finally struck out on my own, working mainly in domestic and commercial environments, these years of high-end experience became absolutely invaluable. I’d learned how to do a great job – without cutting corners, and without charging ridiculous fees.
We built up a client base from word-of-mouth in really difficult economic times. When the recession struck, the last thing on a lot of people’s minds was decorating their homes. Work was sometimes hard to find. But we stuck to our guns, always putting quality and the customer first. People called back, recommended us to their friends, on internet forums – we decorated a row of beautiful Georgian townhouses in Grafton Square, Clapham, after being recommended neighbour to neighbour – and business is now booming. We recently did some work on a house that features on the next series of Channel Four’s Grand Designs, so keep an eye out for us.
